There’s some Autumn in the air
According to my local news this may not be so in the rest of the country, but the DC area seems to have finally left summer behind. Now, this means we’re having 75 degree days with no humidity, but after August in the Capitol region that feels almost winterlike!
I love having the chance to keep my windows open all the time, even if that means my toes have gotten a little cold in the evenings. I am NOT complaining about this, since it means it’s time to pull out my hand knit socks. Hooray!

The great thing about socks is that they’re relatively fast knits, and, for the budget minded among us, it’s nice to only have to buy one skein for a project. The real problem, though, is having to choose which skein to buy.
MySmallWonders has a terrific selection of hand painted sock yarns. It took me a while to pick out which yarn to show here, as I kept “squeeing” over each new selection. I finally decided upon “Tangy”. If you’re not feeling particularly tangy, check out her store, as she’s got hand painted superwash wool/nylon blend yarns in a variety of different flavors.
If you’re in a mood for yarn with more exotic twist, try BethBrown’s shop, where she offers a superwash merino/nylon/bamboo mix, as well as a superwash merino and tencel blend. The bamboo, she notes, wicks water away and keeps feet not too warm (perfect for the early fall, right?)Shown is Roses are Red, a merino/tencel blend.
Etsyfast also has a number of spinners in its ranks. Merlinthecat offers a few skeins of handspun sock yarn in mohair, alpaca or llama. Other handspun sock yarns are offered by Naturallyspun, shunklies, Whimzypinzy, angorayarn and myristica.

Be sure to check out FearlessFiber‘s shop. In addition to a variety of sock patterns, they offer cedar sock blockers for when you’re finished knitting up those toe-sty masterpieces. The sock shown is the Tri-color slip stitch pattern.
